Writing Dialogue Practice Activities | Dialogue Worksheets

Teach students the art of writing dialogue using this step-by-step cooperative lesson plan. Everything you need to teach dialogue is included! Students begin the lesson by analyzing the subtle differences dialogue creates when added to narrative writing. Next, students take notes on the rules of punctuation when incorporating dialogue into their writing. After learning the rules of punctuation, students are provided with a guided practice for dialogue punctuation followed by a collaborative dialogue writing activity. The lesson ends with an independent dialogue writing assessment.

Sample Paragraphs: Sample paragraphs are provided for the anticipatory activity. Students use the paragraphs to analyze the differences dialogue creates when added to narrative writing.

Dialogue Punctuation Notes: As a class, review the rules for dialogue punctuation. If possible, require students to take notes. They may wish to revisit the punctuation rules later in the lesson.

Guided Practice Sentences: Next, put the practice sentences on the board (or pass out as worksheets) for students to add punctuation. After the students have punctuated the practice sentences, review as a class for accuracy.

Synonyms for Said: Before moving on to the group activity, guide the class in a brainstorming activity producing synonyms for the word said. A list of words to replace ‘said’ is included with this lesson plan.

Cooperative Writing Practice: Place students in groups. Pass out one cooperative paragraph to each group. Instruct the groups to revise their paragraph to include dialogue.

Independent Assessment: At this point in the lesson, students should be prepared to complete an independent dialogue writing assessment. An independent assessment paragraph is included to project or pass out to each student. Instruct students to revise the paragraph to include the correct use of dialogue. You may wish to review the grading rubric before starting the assessment.
