Math Mystery: Case of the Misplaced Pot of Gold

Leroy McClumsy, a leprechaun, is really sad because he cannot remember where he left his pot of gold in Mathhattan. St Patrick’s Day won’t be much fun for him if he doesn’t find it. A great math detective is needed to help solve the case for poor Mr McClumsy!

There are five clue worksheets. Below is the math involved to solve:

- Clue 1 Worksheet: Multiplying decimals by powers of ten

- Clue 2 Worksheet: Function tables (students apply a given rule to numbers in a table, for example: a = 10n + 3.)

- Clue 3 Worksheet: Review Perimeter measurement using decimals to the tenths (available in both imperial and metric unit versions)

- Clue 4 Worksheet: Ordering fractions (with the same numerator)

- Clue 5 Worksheet: Subtracting decimals (tenths and hundredths)

Also included: Instructions, printable awards, a digital option with Google Slides, an editable locations list, and two videos (for the introduction and ending).

Editable Places list >> This way you can change the location names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

I hope your students enjoy. Please do not hesitate to email me on [email protected] if you need help or have any questions when using this resource.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 0, and given the rule “Add 6” and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.
