    Description

These task cards are a great way to get your students decoding unknown words. You can also use these task cards as an extra intervention or to start off your guided reading time. They are newly updated to be aligned with the Science of Reading (SOR.) I've replaced or updated the strategies that encouraged guessing:

    • The Eagle Eye strategy has been replaced by Finder Flamingo (find the phonograms in the word)
    • The Skippy Frog strategy has been replaced with Syllable Shark (divide the word by its syllables.)
    • The Tryin’ Lion strategy is still here but the goal is for students to try another strategy if one does not work.

*Please note, this resource was in my shop for several years before making this change. You will still see the original version included. I left this here by request because I wanted to honor those who purchased this resource when the original strategies were included. Use which ever version suits your classroom and needs best. Be sure to check out the preview and video preview to see more! Please read over the entire product description before purchasing.

    How To Use the Cards:

    • Stretchy Snake Task Cards-Students will tap each dot to segment the sounds. Then, they will slide their finger on the arrow to blend the word.
    • Lips the Fish Task Cards-Students will say the first part of the word. Then, they will slide their finger on the arrow to read the rest of the word. They can read the word altogether at the bottom of the card.
    • Flippy Dolphin Task Cards-Student will read the word using both the short and long vowel sound. They can decide which vowel sound makes sense and matches the picture. They will use a dry erase marker to circle the answer, long or short. It will be pretty easy for students to read the word since it matches the picture but it really gets them thinking about short and long vowel sounds!
    • Chunky Monkey Task Cards- Give the child a dry erase marker and have them circle familiar “chunks” or parts of the word that they know. I have organized the cards by short, long, and irregular vowels. Many of the words will be longer since it is easier to use these strategy on longer words with more “chunks.”
    • Syllable Shark Task Cards-Students will use their dry erase marker to divide each word by its syllables to read the words.
    • Finder Flamingo Task Card- Students will use a dry erase marker to either circle or underline each phonogram in the given words. After, students can read the word and write the number of phonograms in the magnifying glass at the bottom of the card.
    • Tryin' Lion Task Cards-In the first version, students will roll a die. Then, they will choose a card and read the nonsense word on that card while using the strategy that was rolled. Students can keep rolling to try new strategies to read the word. In the second version, students will choose a card. They will use a strategy at the bottom of the card to try to read the word. Encourage students to use a few strategies and check them off using a dry erase marker as they decode the word.

    Original 2017 Version:

    • Skippy Frog Task Cards -Cut out the frogs (included) and glue them on popsicle sticks. Have students cover up the end or entire underlined word when reading the sentence. After they have read the sentence, they will uncover the word and reread the entire sentence to decode the underlined word. Students may be able to solve the word using the context of the sentence or, if needed, they can use previously learned strategies.
    • Tryin' Lion Task Cards - First, students will read the sentence. Then, they will read both word choices and decide which word makes sense. They will circle the word with a dry erase marker.
    • Eagle Eye Task Cards - Students will read the sentence and use the picture clue to read the underlined word or words.

    Set Up:

    • Print, laminate, and cut out the cards. There are labels included so you can organize them by skill. I like to organize mine in the Recollections™ Color Photo & Craft Keeper from Michaels. If you don't have this, you can also hole punch the cards and put them on loose leaf rings.
    • I would recommend printing the cards one set at a time. For example, print all of the lips the fish cards together. That makes it easier to manage and keep organized.
    • You will need dry erase markers and some dice for the tryin' lion strategy.
    • I've also included 3 different options for documentation of the cards you have used and data collection.

I'll be honest, this is a big resource! It took me a decent amount of time to print, laminate, cut out, and organize the cards. I promise though once it's done, you will be so happy because you can use it with so many levels of student ability throughout the school year! I just want you to know that there is definitely some prep involved before you purchase! ;)

*Please* ask any and all questions before purchasing. Product is available as is. Sorry no custom edits at this time. The cards are 3.3 inches tall by 5.9 inches wide and are three to a page.

    Printing:

Please, please, please make sure your PDF reader is up to date. :) If your PDF reader is not up to date it can cause your printing to appear distorted and waste your precious ink! Even if other things on your computer look normal when you print, this can appear distorted since it is such a large file and contains so many graphics.

“As a first year teacher, this bundle was a saving grace. Not only is it cute and inviting for students to use, but it also helps me to track growth, weaknesses, and everything in between. Not only can I use this with small groups, but I also incorporate it into stations. One of the best purchases I have ever made.” -Jessica C.

“This has been an absolute necessity this year in first grade! We teach the animal strategies in the beginning of the year so I have been able to use these task boxes in things like small groups to help students that might be having trouble with one of them! During teaching the strategies these were also great to have students work in pairs and complete a box! Thank you so much for this awesome product!” -Lindsay P.
