I have been a tutor for FOREVER! In high school we had study hall and I always worked ahead, so I ended up tutoring the other students. Then, in college, I had so much tutoring experience that I was hired to tutor in the local middle schools through a grant program. Even though I majored in chemistry, and worked in the field a short while, I ended up developing a tutoring center for a state college in Georgia. They liked that one so much that they asked me to develop another one just for their STEM program. While I have tutored for 16 years, I have taught in traditional classrooms for 5 years. I have taught both chemistry and algebra in the classroom, so I know some of the struggles of the classroom teacher as well. What really got me started was another student in college. A bunch of students and I were preparing for a chemistry test. A classmate of mine was tired and said,"Why did God make chemistry? We have to learn all this stuff about things that we can't even see." That sort of sparked these ideas that I have been putting to paper for the last 8 years and finally decided to put them on here! I want your students to SEE science.
I am an active lecture teacher. I like to explain things to my students with steps whenever possible. My students like when I give them steps. In the classroom, I usually explain the lesson for 20-30 minutes using examples and allowing questions. Then, I use the last 20-10 minutes to pass out a handout and let the student try out what I have taught them. That way they don't get home and go, "Oh no! How in the world do I do this?!"
Yet to be added
I have a bachelors degree in chemistry.
I have consulted for textbook publishers, assisted in implementing a national math curriculum through the Carnegie Foundation, and just love making learning easier...especially if I can find a way to put art and science together.
